Bald cypress

Native to Florida, great for single trees and forest groupings.

There are trees 800 to 1000 years old in the Cache River basin in Illinois. Bald cypress has been planted far north of its natural range. There are specimens in Minnesota, Southern Canada, and some 75-year-old trees in New York.

The bald cypress prefers very wet, swampy soils. Riverbanks, lake floodplains, wet depressions. They often grow in pure, almost circular, stands; viewed on the horizon, these stands have a peculiar dome shape, with shorter, almost stunted trees growing around the edges and trees gradually growing taller toward the center. As a landscape tree it grows well in relatively dry soils.

Black Olive-

Locally grown from seed in South Florida, small leaves great Bonsai.

Though commonly called 'black olive tree', this native of the upper Florida Keys (some consider it native, others do not) is not the edible olive we know and love, but does produce a small, black seed-capsule. Black olive is a 40 to 50-foot-tall evergreen tree with a smooth trunk holding up strong, wind-resistant branches, forming a pyramidal shape when young but developing a very dense, full, oval to rounded crown with age. Sometimes the top of the crown will flatten with age, and the tree grows horizontally. The lush, dark bluish-green, leathery leaves are two to four inches long and clustered at branch tips, sometimes mixed with the 0.5 to 1.5-inch-long spines found along the branches.

 An unusual bonsai subject which may increase in popularity as an indoor tree. It is very salt tolerant, making it a good choice for bonsai lovers by the sea.

Bougainvillea- Bougainvillea glabra

This tree is one of the most beautiful of all bonsai because of its delicate white flower and its vibrant leaf color.

Bougainvillea, named for a French navigator, is a native of South America and is grown extensively in the warmer climates of the United States. It is a member of the Nyctaginaceae family with close relatives being the four o'clock and the sand verbena. Bougainvillea is an evergreen vine which is just as happy spreading horizontally or hanging downwards as it is climbing upwards, it makes itself at home in almost any situation. It can be grown as a hedge, groomed as a ground cover, pruned as an espalier, trained as a tree or contained in a pot in a variety of shapes. Its trunk tends to be gnarled. Bougainvillea is ideal for bonsai. Red, violet, orange, yellow or white bracts which appear on the ends of new growth. Available in nurseries and from bonsai specialty growers. A good source is from old gardens being redesigned and from trash piles where a frustrated homeowner has thrown the thorny plant.

They flower most heavily in winter and early spring, but some plants put forth scattered clusters all year. The colors are found in tones of purple, lavender, carmine, scarlet, red, pink, orange, yellow and white. Single and double flower forms are available. Double forms tend to carry their blooms near the end of the stems rather than distributing them evenly over the plant. The colorful, papery "blooms" are not flowers; they are bracts. The true flower is white, trumpet shaped and almost unnoticeable within the bracts. Bougainvilleas are available in a variety of species, each having its unique characteristics.

Chinese Elm

Chinese elm is fast growing, deciduous or evergreen depending on its location forms a graceful upright rounded canopy with shiny, dark green leathery leaves. Elm is moderately salt tolerant. Several dwarf varieties, sports of Ulmus parvifolia, exist which grow slower than the ordinary Chinese elm but it produces a much finer network of twigs and branches. It is these sports which are used for bonsai.

Will grow in full sun or partial shade. Zones 5B - 10A.Needs a lot of water.

Chinese Pepper or “sichuan pepper” refers to a spice obtained form a group of closely related plants of genus Zanthoxylum. In Asia, most representatives of this genus are found in the Himalaya region, furthermore in Central, South, South East and East Asia. Dawn Redwood

THESE ARE METASEQUOIA GLYPTOSTROBOIDES OR DAWN REDWOOD BONSAI STARTERS. Ancient trees related to coastal redwood of California. Thought to be extinct, but discovered in China in 1947. These are 2 year old trees. A tree similar to a cypress tree, but with the ability to live in a little less wet environement. These are great for forest building or repotting up for greater growth or putting into the ground for even more rapid growth. We make twin trunk forests with these. Ficus, Retusa (Ficus Tigerbark)

Tree that can grow in most environments. It makes this tree a unique addition to any collection.

This is a huge tree growing to 60 feet tall and 60 to 70 feet wide. The dense, rounded canopy and gracefully drooping branches of Weeping Fig made it quite popular as a landscape tree until recently. The thick, shiny, two to five-inch-long, evergreen leaves generously clothe the long branches, and the tiny figs eventually turn a deep red. Branches will weep toward the ground forming a canopy so dense that nothing grows beneath it.

There are over 600 species of Ficus, most of them tropical and evergreen, although some, most notably F. carica, the common fig, are deciduous. Ficus produces a unique "fruit" which is actually an inverted flower. Not all Ficus produce edible fruit.

Ficus is one of the most loved bonsai for many reasons. It is an excellent tree for beginners, as most species of Ficus are fast growers, tolerant of most any soil and light conditions, make fine indoor bonsai, and perhaps most importantly, are remarkably forgiving of those just learning bonsai watering techniques. Most Ficus grow "banyan" roots naturally; this feature is often showcased by styling Ficus in dramatic air-root and root-over-rock styles.

 Fukien Tea is a perfect tree for the beginning bonsai artist.  It is a fast growing hardy tree.  With it’s small leaves, delicate white flower, and gnarled trunk it is one of the most interesting bonsai trees available. A very small genus of tropical tree which was once referred to (and still often listed as) Carmona. The most widely known Ehretia species is the Fukien tea, a tropical shrub originating in Southern China and other parts of Southeast Asia. It is very popular for bonsai in China, but not a traditional favorite in Japan. It can be grown outdoors in warm climates, but is quite popular as an indoor bonsai. Ehretia anacua, a recent addition to bonsai, is more resistant to heat and draught.

Juniper- J. procumbens cv. "nana"

Plants sold as J. procumbens cv. "nana" in the USA are generally either that plant or J. squamata cv. ‘prostrata’ the true procumbens in identified by a small white line on each side of the underside of the needle. Functionally, the to plants are otherwise quite similar. This little tree can be grown in most well-drained bonsai soils. If kept too damp, it will develop root nodes on the trunk. Assiduous pinching will give a nice, tight foliage mass. they need good light and air circulation, fertilization as for any other juniper; frequent doses of 1/2 strength, balanced fertilizers, and an occasional shot of foliar iron. They are susceptible to mites, which cause stippling and discoloration of the foliage, as well as weakening of the plant. They can be wired almost any time. Keep your tools wet with alcohol to avoid spreading fungal problems. Keep your new plant away from drying winds, in semi-shade for several weeks, but don't feed the roots for 4 weeks. Use cut paste or satsuki bond on all wounds. Don't over-water or allow to dry out. To avoid wire scars watch your tree's growing seasons each year and wire should be removed before it cuts into the bark.

The Ligustrum is another hardy tree imported from China.  It grows well indoors and out and makes a great starter tree. It produces a small white flower and can develop attractive air roots over time. : Ligustrum, or Privet are found in many species and cultivars with a diversity of leaf colors, leaf forms and growth habits. All are tolerant of heavy pruning. The white flowers are attractive during late spring and early summer.

Also called "Thousand Star" because of the multitude of small white flowers that this tree produces, it makes a great bonsai. The heavy trunks and interesting surface roots give this tree the sought after aged look.  These small shrubs are much loved as bonsai for their tiny flowers which may occur 2-3 times yearly, gnarled trunks, and naturally miniature leaves. Most bonsai are S. foetida, of which many cultivars are available. Probably the two most common bonsai purchased by the casual bonsai buyer in America are Juniperus and Serissa. Judging from the number of junked junipers and shriveled Serissas, beginners would be far happier with elm and Ficus. Serissa is a notoriously fussy bonsai. The good news is that they aren't that hard to keep alive. But considering that most people buy Serissa on impulse because the plant is so spectacular at the store, the bad news is bad indeed. The plant will generally drop its flowers within a day or two. Then the plant will drop its leaves. If the grower doesn't panic (and many Serissas are inadvertantly killed by panicing beginners who respond by drastically over/underwatering the plant) the plant will soon regrow its leaves. A power struggle then ensues. The grower soon discovers that the Serissa drops its leaves if it has too much water. Too little water. If it's too hot or too cold. If it's moved, or there is a shift in lighting or temperature.

Malpighia, Cherry           

 Has a wonderful pink flower with a bright red cherry The name, Malpighia, is used to honor Marcello Malpighia (1628 1693). He was a distinguished naturalist at Bologna, Italy. Malpighia are related to Barbados cherry and Surinam cherry. Dwarf shrub, evergreen opposite short petioled, spiny toothed leaves. Open, pink flowers and red fruit. There are three varieties of malpighia which are used as bonsai subjects. Each has unique characteristics. In their native tropical American environment, they may be found in the under story of tropical forests or on rocky hill sides near streams where the soil is rich and moist. Plants may be obtained by collecting during the summer months, but can also be purchased from a nursery or started from seed, hard or soft wood cuttings or root cuttings taken in the summer.
